- The verb “do” is often used as the main verb when describing activities such as work, cleaning, studying, shopping and other general activities.
- The verb “do” is often used to ask questions about a person’s job.
- What do you do?

This is used because it’s a question and here the main verb, this is the helping verb. - The answer does not require the use of “do”. - What do you do? - If somebody asks me this question I say: I am a teacher. I’m not using the verb “do” in the answer. - Usually people will say: “I am a___.” and then the profession goes here

- Cleaning

- The verb “do” is often use when cleaning. - He does his laundry at the Laundromat. - Here the main verb, most people use “do”, not “wash” when they clean the clothes. - Here the past tense for doing the “dishes”: she did the dishes. It’s the same as “she washed the dishes”. - Most people will use the verb “do”. - To make the negative for the past tense “didn’t do”: - She didn’t do the dishes. - And for cleaning the house, the activities such as vacuuming, this is the future tense. - When will you do the vacuuming?

- Schoolwork

- The verb “do” is also used for schoolwork. - My kids do their homework after school. This is the present tense. - And if I have to ask them if they’ve done their homework, I say: - Have you done your homework? - This is the present perfect tense. - Here the verb “have”, I choose it because of the subject “you” and the main verb “do” is in the form of the past participle: - Have you done your homework?

- Shopping

- In this sentence: - She does her shopping on the weekend. - Here the verb “do”, it’s in the present tense. - To make the sentence negative: She doesn’t do her shopping during the week. - The main verb is “do” and I make it negative by using “does” and here “not”, this is a contraction: doesn’t. - She doesn’t do her shopping during the week. - And to make a question: - When do you do (this is the main verb) your shopping. - Here the helping verb and here the main verb.

- Requests and commands

- When you ask somebody to do something for you, you can do like this: - Can you do me a favor? - This is the modal verb “can” and the main verb is “do”.

- When asking somebody if they have done something: - Did you do___, and then break here - You can put many different utterances and it’s the simply one to use the word like “that”: Did you do that? That’s ok, too.

- To make the command as the negative: - Don’t do that! - And sometimes go here people simply say: Don’t!
